The Penelopiad: The Myth of Penelope and Odysseus (Myths, The) – Margaret Atwood returns with a shrewd, funny, and insightful retelling of the myth of Odysseus from the point of view of Penelope. Review: I've taken to loading an audiobook on my ipod I was seriously considering reading this book last year as part of my Read-A-Myth challenge but in the end had too many other books to read. The Penelopiad is a novella by Margaret Atwood. While the story is touted as a retelling of The Odyssey from Penelope's point of view, I find it to be so After all, The Odyssey follows Odysseus who is nowhere near Penelope (geographically speaking), so The Penelopiad adds to the story rather than retells it. Here, Atwood turns the focus from Odysseus onto Penelope, who from the underworld of Hades tells us about her own life, interspersed with choruses by the 12 maids who were hung to death upon Odysseus's return. Tonight I am thinking of Margaret Atwood's The Penelopiad, a book I read just prior to Kundera's Identity. A Bit of a Ramble The Penelopiad is the first of the Canongate Myths, a series of myths, fables, and folktales rewritten with a spin by contemporary authors. The Penelopiad is Atwood's retelling of the myth of Odysseus (of The Odyssey) from the perspective of Penelope, Odysseus' wife, who waited at home for him for almost 20 years. This is also the story of Penelope's twelve maids and their murder by Telemachus and Odysseus upon his return. It was published in 2005 as part of the first set of books in the Canongate Myth Series where contemporary authors rewrite ancient myths.
